Bill Burr on Men’s Rights Activists: “They’re cringeworthy”
US stand up comedian Bill Burr has slammed so-called ‘Men’s Rights Activists’ as ‘cringeworthy’. In a recent interview, recorded at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Burr told fellow comic Stuart Goldsmith that “they always try to align my shit to their horse shit”.
Burr is known for his outspoken views, particularly his often critical take on feminism. One of his earliest, best-known routines had him joking that the gender pay gap exists because, “in the unlikely event that we’re both on a Titanic, and it starts to sink, for some fucked up reason, you get to leave with the kids and I have to stay.”
As well as criticising the ‘men’s rights movement’, Burr took umbrage with leading activists’ propensity to try to link his comedy with their ideology. Paul Elam, a prominent blogger with the website A Voice For Men, once described Burr’s act as “straight up red pill”, ‘red pill’ being an allusion to the 1999 film The Matrix. Taking the ‘red pill’ is said to represent rejecting societal norms such as marriage and monogamy as oppressive, anti-male institutions. Elam, at one point, blogged under the pseudonym The Happy Misogynist.
Burr told Goldsmith: “They [men’s rights activists] always try to align my shit to their horse shit”.
The interview was released as part of Goldsmith’s podcast series, The Comedian’s Comedian.
